These are the two most widely sold .22LR versions of the AR15. They both come in a few different variations that include upgraded iron sights. The Smith and Wesson M&P 15/22 and the Colt M4 .22LR imported by Umarex USA are the two models in the pictures below. These can both be purchased for less than 500.00 if you buy from one of the bigger retail gun dealers online. The Colt version has gone to great lengths to be as authentic as possible. It has a metal receiver with the "Colt" trademark and also has the grayish color to it as well to mimic it's bigger brother. However, upon closer inspection, you will find that the buffer tube is mounted differently as well as the barrel to. The Colt is set up very similar to an airsoft rifle. There is an inner barrel that is threaded for the flash hider and the outer barrel is merely for appearance only. The buffer tube is mounted on the same type of system that an electric airsoft rifle utilizes. For instance, I did a custom build that required a PRS sniper stock. The normal mounting kit for regular AR15's wouldn't work. I had to use the mounting kit from an airsoft PRS stock in order for it to mount correctly. Getting to the point, if you plan on building a custom .22LR Colt, you may want to look into using airsoft accessories for the front and rear parts of the rifle. It's starting to become a much more popular idea with the economy being what it is today.
